Background of the Study
Land-use conflicts between farmers and herders have become a recurrent issue in many parts of Nigeria, particularly where traditional farming and pastoral activities intersect. In Iseyin, Oyo State, these conflicts are driven by competition over scarce land resources, exacerbated by environmental changes, population pressures, and evolving land tenure systems (Adeola, 2023). Farmers, who depend on arable land for crop cultivation, often experience disruptions as herders bring their livestock to graze, leading to diminished agricultural yields and economic instability (Babatunde, 2024). Conversely, herders struggle to find adequate grazing land as agricultural expansion encroaches on traditional pastoral routes. The situation is further complicated by ambiguous policies and ineffective conflict resolution mechanisms. While historical coexistence was maintained through customary arrangements, modern pressures have intensified these disputes, resulting in social tension and occasional violence (Olaitan, 2023). This study examines the underlying causes, manifestations, and consequences of land-use conflicts in Iseyin, using historical data, field interviews, and policy reviews to develop sustainable solutions for peaceful coexistence (Femi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Land-use conflicts in Iseyin have escalated, significantly impacting both farming and pastoral communities. Disputes over land allocation and resource use have led to reduced agricultural productivity and limited grazing opportunities, contributing to economic hardships and social instability (Oluwaseun, 2023). The absence of clear legal frameworks and effective conflict resolution mechanisms exacerbates these tensions, often resulting in sporadic violence and community disruptions. These ongoing conflicts threaten not only the livelihoods of farmers and herders but also hinder regional development. There is an urgent need to understand the multifaceted nature of these conflicts to develop sustainable solutions that balance the interests of both parties (Ayodele, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To investigate the causes of land-use conflicts between farmers and herders.
To assess the socio-economic impacts of these conflicts on local communities.
To propose strategies for conflict resolution and sustainable land management.
Research Questions:
What are the primary causes of land-use conflicts in Iseyin?
How do these conflicts affect the economic activities of farmers and herders?
What strategies can be implemented to resolve land-use disputes?
Research Hypotheses:
Land-use conflicts significantly reduce agricultural productivity in Iseyin.
Inadequate legal frameworks exacerbate disputes between farmers and herders.
Implementing structured conflict resolution mechanisms can mitigate land-use conflicts.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the complex dynamics of land-use conflicts in Iseyin, offering insights into the socio-economic and cultural factors driving disputes between farmers and herders (Akinlabi, 2023). The research aims to inform policymakers and community leaders on effective conflict resolution strategies, contributing to sustainable land management practices and enhanced regional stability (Olawale, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining land-use conflicts between farmers and herders in Iseyin. It focuses on local socio-economic and environmental factors, excluding broader national trends.
Definitions of Terms:
Land-Use Conflicts: Disputes arising from competing claims over land resources.
Farmers: Individuals engaged in crop cultivation.
Herders: Individuals or groups involved in raising and grazing livestock.
